Mr. Roberts graduated from Samford University in 1966 and received his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in 1969. Mr. Roberts was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in September of 1969 and the United States Tax Court in February of 1973. Mr. Roberts worked as an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service from 1969 until 1974.
Mr. Roberts served as an advisor to major financial institutions including the Parker Bank of Cullman, Alabama. In his capacity as attorney for the majority stockholders, Mr. Roberts negotiated a multi-million dollar sale to AmSouth Bank (now Regions Bank). Mr. Roberts continues to represent the original closely held owners of the Bank and handles all their investment transactions and oversees and directs the proceeds received from the closely held Parker Bank.
Mr. Roberts authored numerous articles and lectured on estate and gift tax planning. Mr. Roberts' tax background has allowed him to challenge numerous I.R.S. adverse decisions and sucessfully represent his clients against such adverse action by the I.R.S. and other governmental agencies. In 1977, Mr. Roberts became the first attorney in history to successfully win an award of attorneys' fees against the I.R.S. on behalf of his client in the case of U.S. and Wayne E. Jackson, I.R.S. Agent v. Garrison Const. Co., Inc., Civ. Action No. 77-M0334 (N.D. Ala. 1977). He served as attorney for a number of years for the Decorator's Showhouse which is a primary fundraiser for the Alabama Symphony.
Mr. Roberts is actively involved with several organizations which deal with his love of flying as he has owned and flown his own airplane for the past thirty-five years.
Mr. Roberts has been very involved in charitable work and served on the Board of the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham, Alabama which he helped to found. Mr. Roberts formed Children's Oncology Service of Alabama and actively participated on the Board for a number of years.
Mr. Roberts' practice focuses primarily in the areas of complex business litigation and tax controversies.
